Dr. Durrie는, LASIK이 다소 침체기를 겪고는 있지만, 이전에 수술을 받았던 환자 가 부모가 되어 자녀들이 언제 LASIK을 받 을 수 있는지 문의하는 경우가 많다고 말했 다. 또한 콘택트 렌즈에 적응하지 못하는 환 자의 수도 많기 때문에 시장 자체가 위축될 가능성은 적다. SMILE(Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany)과 같은 새로운 굴절 수술들의 도입 역시 LASIK 수술에 대한 관심을 다시 환기시키고 있다. Dr. Price는 "SMILE이 언젠가는 LA- SIK에 맞먹는 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있겠지 만, 지금 당장은 그렇지 않습니다. 현재 우 리는 LASIK이 얼마나 안전한지를 충분히 알고 있습니다. 저는 앞으로 더 많은 환자 가 LASIK 수술을 받을 것이라고 생각합니 다. 제대로 시행한 LASIK 수술은 매우 안전 하고 예측 가능합니다."라고 말했다.
