28 EWAP FEATURE December 2017 Dear Friends & Colleagues We are saddened by the untimely passing of our dear friend and colleague Dr Khoo Chong Yew. Our deepest condolences to his family. Chong Yew was one of the gentlemen of ophthalmology. Kind of heart and soft of word, he taught and inspired a generation of budding eye surgeons. Always with a smile on his face, he went about his work quietly and effectively. He was most well known as a pioneer in contact lens practice and knowledgeable in the field of medical ethics. His passing is a loss that ophthalmology will feel deeply. Thank you for all you have done for us in the Asia-Pacific, Chong Yew. Rest in peace. Dr Ronald Yeoh, President Board of Officers & Members Dear Friends I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of my beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Khoo Chong Yew. I first met him as a trainee at the former Eye Department of Singapore General Hospital. Chong Yew was greatly loved, admired and respected by generations of ophthalmologists in Singapore — those of us who were his colleagues and those he trained. He was an unassuming man, always cheerful, gentle, and kind. He also had a special sense of humor. Chong Yew was instrumental in setting up Contact Lens Subspecialties at the Department of Ophthalmology at the National University Hospital as well as the Singapore National Eye Centre. As a matter of fact, he was the first ophthalmologist to introduce the soft contact lens to Singapore in the 1970s. Aside from his surgical and clinical contributions, Chong Yew was also an excellent administrator, being the chairman of both the National Committee on Ophthalmology and the National Ethics Committee. He was also a member of the Singapore Medical Council. In addition, he was the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Raffles Hospital. For his years of dedicated public service, he was awarded the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) in 1996 and Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) in 2006 by the Singapore government. We have lost a dear friend and valued member of our community, but his legacy in the field of ophthalmology will live on. Chong Yew will always be remembered with great fondness and respect.
