EyeWorld India June 2025 Issue

6 EyeWorld Asia-Pacific | June 2025 EDITORIAL Abhay Vasavada Regional Managing Editor EyeWorld India This issue of the EyeWorld carries the Binkhorst Medal Lecture from the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons—one of the most prestigious named lectures in ophthalmology today. There is a certain charm to these named lectures. What makes them especially important is that they commemorate the work and remind us of the tremendous contributions made by legends in the field. As time passes, we often tend to forget—or even undermine—the legacy handed down to us by our predecessors. Listening to these lectures is therefore like taking a peek into history while keeping our sights set on the future. This year, my dear friend Dr. Ronald Yeoh was the proud recipient of the Binkhorst Medal Lecture. The topic he chose—“hydro chronicles”—was a classic example of what defines a thoughtful surgeon and teacher. Dr. Yeoh highlighted key pearls and pitfalls surrounding hydrodissection during cataract surgery, and I strongly recommend reading this feature in this issue. It offers valuable insights into how a surgeon should think critically and observe every step they perform, even if it is part of their daily routine. Secondly, it teaches us the importance of retrospection and evaluation of every surgical step. Thirdly, it reminds us that we must continue to deepen our understanding of each aspect of surgery by leveraging ideas and technology as they evolve. And last but not the least, it serves as a masterclass in teaching—showing how even a seemingly basic maneuver can be elevated in importance when properly understood and communicated. There are also other interesting articles in this issue, but what caught my attention were several innovative ideas. One focuses on the use of AI to better understand variables affecting patient outcomes—especially patient perceptions. Another highlights the application of decellularized Descemet’s membrane products to manage non-healing epithelial defects—an exciting new mode of treatment for such cases. In fact, this entire issue presents a rich variety of clinically relevant topics alongside the latest advances in our field. I hope you find it as engaging and enlightening as I did. This is also an exciting time for all of us as the annual meeting of the APACRS draws near. As organizing chairman for the meeting, I humbly take this opportunity to invite you all to join us in Ahmedabad, India, from 21 to 23 August 2025, under the theme “Learning from the Masters.” Happy Reading !
