Dr Ronald Yeoh, President Board of Officers & Members Dear F riends I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of my belov ed friend and colleague, Dr. K hoo Chong Yew. I first met him as a trainee at the former Eye Department of Singapore G eneral Hospital. Chong Yew was greatly lov ed, admired and respected by generations of ophthalmologists in Singapore — those of us who were his colleagues and those he trained. He was an unassuming man, always cheerful, gentle, and k ind. He also had a special sense of humor. Chong Yew was instrumental in setting up Contact Lens Subspecialties at the Department of Ophthalmology at the National U niv ersity Hospital as well as the Singapore National Eye Centre. As a matter of fact, he was the first ophthalmologist to introduce the soft contact lens to Singapore in the 1 9 7 0s. Aside from his surgical and clinical contributions, Chong Yew was also an ex cellent administrator, being the chairman of both the National Committee on Ophthalmology and the National Ethics Committee. He was also a member of the Singapore Medical Council. In addition, he was the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Raffles Hospital. F or his years of dedicated public serv ice, he was awarded the Public Serv ice Medal ( Pingat Bak ti Masyarak at) in 1 9 9 6 Public Serv ice Star ( Bintang Bak ti Masyarak at) in 2 006 by t Singapore gov ernment.
