ent than a contact lens fitting in an adult. The cornea is steeper and smaller, she said, and a suitable tight contact lens may not be available. She also said that there is rapid refractive change in early infancy. However, Dr. Wuthisiri did note that the basic fitting principle is the same as with an adult, but it may be difficult to get the basic information for the fitting. There may be difficulty with contact lens insertion and removal. Dr. Wuthisiri then went on to discuss the use of IOLs. Primary IOLs have become a standard of care for children over 2 years old, she said. However, use during in- fancy is still controversial. IOLs offer immediate and constant partial optical correction, she said. However, disadvantages of IOLs may include problems with calculation and selection of an ap- propriated IOL power, changes of residual refractive error, and high incidence of VAO. APACRS annual meeting kicks off with opening ceremony The APACRS annual meeting opening ceremony featured welcome addresses by Pannet Pangputhipong, MD , Bangkok Thailand, organizing chairman of the meeting, Prof. Emeritus Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn , Minister of Public Health of Thai- land, and Ronald Yeoh, MD , Singapore, APACRS president. The APACRS annual meeting is a great forum to discuss all aspects of cataract from new clinical insights to brilliant technological innova- tions and evidence-based policy advocacy, Prof. Sakolsatayadorn said. He officially declared the opening of this year’s meeting and wished everyone an enjoyable and productive conference. During his welcome address, Dr. Yeoh stressed the value of the Barrett Online Calculator, created by Graham Barrett, MD , Perth, Australia. The calculator has been around for 10 years, but many had not real- ized its real value until recently. The calculator is available online for free, and Dr. Yeoh noted that it gets around 50,000–100,000 clicks per day and has helped countless surgeons and patients. “Before I step down as the president, I want to thank Graham once more for giving this wonderful calculator to the world,” he said. “Thank you for entrusting me with the presidency of APACRS, which has been the highlight of my career,” Dr. Yeoh said, adding that Hiroko Bissen- Miyajima, MD, PhD , Tokyo, Japan, will be the next APACRS president. “I’m sure she will take APACRS to new and greater heights,” he said. 2018 APACRS LIM Lecture highlights LASIK The APACRS LIM Lecture was presented by Eric Donnenfeld, MD , Rockville Centre, New York, on the topic of “Refractive Surgery Comes of Age: How Good is LASIK? The Myths, Misconceptions, and Reality.” In spite of LASIK’s long clinical and historical presence, miscon- ceptions regarding the risks and benefits of this procedure persist, eroding the reputation of the procedure and of those in the field that remain its unwavering sup- porters, Dr. Donnenfeld said.
