APACRS–SNEC synergy “In my view, the highlight of this virtual APACRS meeting is the fact that it is a specially tailored program involving the top experts in each subject from the Asia Pacific region and across the world,” wrote Congress President Abhay Vasavada, MD, regarding the particular strengths of the APACRS annual meeting. “My hope is that every attendee will take home useful practical tips for enhancing their surgical and patient management skills that they can apply right away.” SNEC provides additional focus: “SNEC’s strengths are in the wide-spectrum of its sub-specialty services,” wrote Dr. Wong. “We have focused on featuring our sub-specialty symposia and instructional courses in retina, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, etc.” He touted the meeting’s SNEC faculty, also widely published leaders in their respective fields of research undertaken in collaboration with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), SNEC’s research arm, as well as the four named lectures by world-renowned experts to be given at various symposia across the SNEC program. “Additionally, the SNEC Nursing and Optometry programs are forward looking, complementing the rapid developme- nts in clinical practices of the ophthalmologists,” Dr. Wong added. SNEC Program to include Named Lectures SNEC will present several Named Lectures to be delivered at various symposia throughout the scientific program. Prof. Timothy Sullivan is a former president of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has published over 130 papers, several book chap- ters, and given 400 presentations at national and international meetings. He is on the editorial boards of Clinical Experimental Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Sur- gery, and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology . He will be presenting the Richard Fan Lectureship in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences on “Periocular Ocular Trauma” during the SNEC Instruction Course on “Managing Ocular Trauma – A Multidisci- plinary Approach” today from 16:10 to 16:20 hrs (UTC+8). Assoc. Prof. Pearse Keane, MD, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of AMD and other complex macular diseases, and focuses his research on the application of new technologies in ophthalmology. In 2016, he initiated collaboration between Moorfields and Google DeepMind to develop AI algorithms for the earlier detection and treatment of retinal disease. He will present the SNEC 30th Anniversary Lecture on “Transforming Healthcare with AI – Lessons from Ophthalmology” during “The Present and Future (Medical Retina)” at 14:30 hrs on Saturday, 31 July 2021.
